The Studio
Forty years of looking.
Afterlight began with a ten-year-old…
…and a black light.
A bedroom poster that became something else entirely when the light changed — and a kid who never stopped wondering why. Most people use light to see art. Jim Lemkin spent forty years watching what light does to it — how pigment answers different wavelengths, how a painting's hierarchy reorganizes under a different lamp, how a room's entire mood can pivot on spectrum.
For years, guests in his homes have watched paintings transform under shifting light and asked the same question: how is it doing that?
The answer became a company.
Afterlight is a studio of gradual revelation.
Authoring physical works composed to hold more than one visual state — and building the instruments that perform them. The paintings are real. The pigment is real. The transformation happens in your perception, exactly as composed.

The Craft
Every premium edition begins in the hands of master woodworker Mike Ponka — hand-cut joinery, hardwood construction, signed work. The instrument is engineered to disappear. The craft is built to last generations.
